Throw-In
The throw-in location is a rule. The accuracy of a throw-in spot is important to both teams and for correct rule application. Use proper throw-in procedures when administering the throw-in rule. A. Types of throw-in. 1. Designated spot 2. Any point out-of-bounds along end line (after a goal or awarded goal) B. A throw-in will follow. 1. Fouls when penalty does not include free throw(s) a. before bonus b. double foul c. team control foul d. player control foul e. simultaneous foul 2. Free throws for flagrant, intentional and technical fouls 3. Violations a. out-of-bounds (including ball passing over rectangular backboard) b. traveling c. illegal dribble d. 5-seconds closely guarded e. throw-in f. 3 seconds g. 10-second backcourt h. backcourt i. designated throw-in spot j. free throw by offense k. jump ball
l. kick m. fist n. basket interference o. goaltending p.excessive swinging of arms/elbows q.leaving the court for an unauthorized reason 4. Alternating possession rulings 5. Warnings as defined in Rules 4-47 and 4-48
6. Successful field goals 7. Successful free throws 8. Awarded goals a. basket interference b. goaltending
C. Nearest spot for out-of bounds violations (see diagram pg. 44). 1. Is the spot out-of-bounds nearest to where the violation occurred 2. Official making the ruling must indicate the throw-in spot 3. Administering official must designate the throw-in spot D. Throw-in spots following fouls, violations (other than out-of-bounds), held balls, time-outs and other stoppages. If the ensuing throw-in is in the frontcourt, it will be administered at the spot nearest to one of the four approved designated spots nearest to where the foul, violation, held ball or other stoppage occurred. If the ensuing throw-in is in the backcourt, or after an out-of-bounds violation, it will be administered at the spot nearest
