Violation Procedures

A. When ruling a violation, official shall: 1. Simultaneously sound the whistle, signal to stop the clock, and come to a stop facing the court. 2. Make eye contact with their partner. 3. Briefly, maintain the stop-the-clock signal, STOP, and then signal the type of violation. 4. When ruling out-of-bounds violations, simultaneously state the jersey color of the team entitled to the ball for the ensuing throw-in and point in the direction of that team’s basket. Officials should never turn their back to the players on the court when indicating the direction. 5. Indicate the throw-in spot. Note : Each signal in the sequence should be displayed independently of one another. Officials shall signal to stop the clock, signal direction and indicate the spot using the same arm. Officials should avoid signaling direction across their torso. If it is not possible to use the same arm used to stop the clock without turning their back to the court, officials should drop their stop the clock arm, use the opposite arm to signal direction, and if needed, switch arms again to indicate the spot. B. Violation Reminders. 1. Officials may seek help or offer help to ensure accurate rulings. 2. Warnings are reported by going to the reporting area.
