Free Throw Administration and Coverages
A. Positions: 1. While assuming their positions, officials should make eye contact and visibly signal the number of free throws to each other. 2. The Trail takes a position opposite the table, approximately three feet behind the free throw line extended and halfway between the free throw lane line and the sideline (see pg. 64). 3. To administer free throws, the Lead takes a position in the free throw lane approximately under the basket. a. After bouncing ball to the free thrower, the Lead steps back and assumes a position that will allow him/her to observe the players in the first lane space on the tableside lane line, and in all three spaces on the opposite lane line. It should be noted, that this is the position for all free throws. Officials should never be positioned in the lower lane space along the lane. 4. When the ball will remain dead after the free throw, the Trail takes a position at the division line near the center circle, to be available to the table crew and identify substitutes eligible to enter before the final attempt. B. Responsibilities: 1. The Lead is responsible for: a. Visibly and verbally indicating the number of free throws. b. After indicating the number of free throws, bouncing the ball to the free thrower and visibly signaling the number of free throws. c. Observing the players in the first lane space on the tableside lane line and in the three spaces on the opposite lane line. d. Assume normal rebounding responsibilities on their side of basket line, once the free throw is released. 2. The Trail is responsible for: a. Signaling the number of free throws to the table. b. Observing the free thrower. c. Official performs a 10-second count using a wrist flick motion (open palm, arm held close to the official’s side) with the hand nearer the division line. d. Observing the players in the second and third spaces on the opposite side lane line e. Observing the flight of the ball. f. Ruling goaltending or basket interference. g. Raising their that is closest to the division line to the start-the-clock position when the free thrower releases the ball, if the final free throw will remain live. h. Monitoring the free thrower and other players after the free thrower releases the ball. i. Starting the clock when the ball is legally touched if the ball remains live. j. Closing down toward the end line and assuming normal rebounding
