Signals & Mechanics Teamwork, Communication Coverage
A. Signals are a means of communication: 1. Between officials 2. To scorer and timer
3. To players and coaches 4. To spectators and media a. Use ONLY approved signals b. Be consistent, present signals alike, game’s language; one language. c. A signal worth giving is worth giving properly d. No play situation is so obvious that a signal should not be given B. Mechanics are “methods and procedures” used by officials while officiating the game. When proper mechanics are used, each official will know: 1. Position and coverage on the court when the ball is live 2. Position and coverage on the court when the ball is dead 3. Primary coverage areas and application of field of vision 4. When and where to use good verbal and non-verbal communications C. When proper mechanics and approved signals are used, it is easier for each official to adhere to the “trust your partner(s)” principle. D. The game must be officiated by a team/crew of officials, working together as a cohesive unit, not as individuals. Good mechanics and signals create good teamwork, and good teamwork results in a well-officiated game. E. When a crew officiates a game displaying good teamwork, each official is responsible for the fouls and violations in their primary coverage areas. This teamwork provides the best coverage of all players on the court. F. In addition to teamwork, communication between officials is essential. Communication can be verbal or non-verbal depending on the situation.
